The Laramie Project

Published by Derek under Music, Personal on October 20, 2008

Tonight I did an improvisation for Bad Habit Production’s upcoming production of The Laramie Project written by Moises Kaufman. They put out a request for origional compositions that were in response to the scrict. I decided to try and make something that I believed to symbolize the play. This improvisation is in memory of Matthew Shephard. It seems like so long ago this tragegy took place, even though only 10 years have passed. Let us all pray that from here on in more and more people are raised with peace in their hearts for all others in the wolrd. Enjoy the recording.

Making a Real Connection

Published by Derek under Personal on October 16, 2008

Today I met a woman at the market. I have seen her talk with Andy before but never really had much interaction with her other than selling produce. As I was loading the truck this woman (Kerry is her name… she spelt it out, but I don’t remember the spelling) came across the back and started asking me questions about the squash. I immediately recognized her, but I was not ready for what she was about to tell me.

Very quickly she started to inform me about something very intimate in her life. I don’t know why or how the conversation started but it moved me. I felt a great kinship with this woman and I feel as though we made a very strong connection in a very short period of time.

I can not explain the transient moment we shared, but I can explain the meaning of it.

It was the first time in a while I met an adult with this kind of kinship. I have met many people, but over the past summer I have been in a place of extreme emotional stress and anxiety. The center I had known was thrown off balance. Kerry’s (sorry if the spelling is wrong) awareness and stillness was exactly what I needed to recharge my battery before the end of the season comes; before the next stage in my life takes place. She broke through to bring me to a new center again. the moment came and went so quickly, but it contained a lot of goodness. Thank you Kerry.

Honk Fest Providence

Published by Derek under Personal on October 13, 2008

Tonight was amazing. Nathan, Bonnie, and I took part in a parade that turned into the reclaiming of washington and empire street!

We started out in Kennedy plaza enjoying the sounds of different brass bands from around the world. They were all a part of this year’s Honk Fest. After all the bands were ready to move, we started our way in a parade down the sidewalks of downtown Providence. As we started to make our way the crowd pushed its way into the streets and then slowly the bands started to follow our lead. Eventually we were dancing down the street stopping traffic in its tracks. I don’t think I’ve ever felt so alive with the rhythms of music. I wish it could have lasted all night.

30 Days

Published by Derek under Personal on October 10, 2008

Soon Nathan and I will be leaving this farm. For a few weeks we’ll sort of be running it.

These days I am feeling exhausted and emotional. I am trying to stay on top of things enough to not get overwhelmed. Keeping positive is getting less easy. I am looking to much ahead instead of focusing on what’s happening.

I have less and less time to be creative. More and more deadlines are coming up. Soon all the loose ends will need to be tied. I hope I can keep it together long enough to make it to the meditation center at the end of November.
