The Hunger Site

Published by Derek under Personal on January 31, 2008

Thank you Nathan!

Because of Nathan I have learned of a new venue for saving the world one click at a time. There is a website that you can go to once a day and click for hunger, breast cancer, child health care, literacy, the rain-forest, and food for animals. The website is:

http://www.thehungersite.com

Just click the button and save someone from hunger, then go to the top of the page, pick another cause’s drop down page, and then click again until you’ve clicked to save all that they offer.

Bikram Yoga

Published by Derek under Personal on January 30, 2008

I went back to Bikram Yoga tonight. I absolutly love this intense yoga workout. I feel more energized and alive after the 85 minute class is over. It completely awakens my awareness and releases all the tension I have in my body. I suggest anyone who is interested in a full mind-body workout to check out the nearest Bikram yoga class. You can locate all the certified classes on the official Bikram Yoga website:

p.s. I will be pushing myself to re-record my newest song “All My Life” and I might even get to record a demo of the other song I’ve been working on.

Animals and Global Warming

I love my new friends…

I received an email today from my new friend Mercedes. It was an article found in the New York Times. I think it has a lot of depth and importance to the issues we face today with energy and world hunger.

What A Pie

Published by Derek under Pictures on January 28, 2008

I have been spending the last three days and nights with Nathan doing various things including making another pie. This one came out far better than its predecessor. Actually it came out better than any pie both of us have ever tasted! Here’s the pic.

On top of that, we also made potato soup, bagels, whole wheat bread, and maduros (fried plantains).

The rest of our time spent together has been wonderful. A part of me wishes he didn’t have to go away for the next few days, but I guess I can finish some of the things I’ve been meaning to do.

I learned a lot from Nathan this week. Mostly about how bringing together our own separate communities will help strengthen the love between the people around us and someday rid the world of all its lack of love. I have been brought aware of anarchist ideas that will free us from this war/violence based government. I just hope we can all come together and bring about a time where all the people are working for everyone around them. Thank you Nathan for this new beautiful perspective as well as all the perspectives in which you allow me to perceive this beautiful life.

A Leap of Faith

Published by Derek under Personal on January 25, 2008

I decided yesterday to take a leap of faith. I applied for the Vipassana Meditation. I decided to just take a step into the unknown because it’s not something I can just do on a whim. I have to actually plan this ahead of time and go for it. I figure if I don’t do it now I probably never will. I will hopefully hear back from them by this weekend or early next week.

Today on the other hand I took another leap of faith. I sent in my registration form to get a certificate in Hatha Yoga. The course would take me to India to study Hatha Yoga for 30 days. I am really excited about this one. It’s going to be a challenge I have never done before.

I’m hoping these two adventures into my physical and psychological limits will help me in creating a life of spiritual healing to help others. I would really like to incorporate these studies into my future careers and create something completely unique and wholesome. I am excited about my future more than ever. My music will be by my side guiding me every step of the way and my spirit will be writing down all of the experiences for me to harness into great songs of pure emotion.

Nathan

Published by Derek under Personal on January 23, 2008

Today I thought a lot about Nathan. He’s been on my mind a lot more lately. I think it’s because we’ve been spending a lot of time together. It’s very natural for me to be spending my time with him and I feel completely comfortable. I especially like learning things from him. I feel like he is always showing me something new about my world. It’s like I have this new amazing perspective to hold me in the moment. I hope our time spent together continues in more and more abundance.

He inspires me a lot and makes me want to keep learning and seeing new things. I recently wrote a song. It’s all about love and desire. I absolutely love it. I can’t believe I bought a guitar a month ago and now I’ve written my first song on it. I can’t wait to share it with you all. The recording is really bad so you’ll have to wait. I didn’t use a click track so the timing is way off. I also can’t play guitar very well…

With all that said I am hopeful for the future more than ever. I am so excited to see what tomorrow brings. I am in love with life and all the mysteries and challenges it holds for me to uncover around every corner.

Freerice.com

Published by Derek under Meditations/Discussions, Personal on January 22, 2008

Besides having the most amazing time last night with Nathan, Mercedes, and Ana-Maria making dinner and spending our time looking at breathtaking art, I came across the most interesting article today in the Providence Phoenix.

The article is about a website where you can play a game and give free rice to hungry children around the world. The game is simple enough… you just have to guess the meaning of the word presented to you on the screen via multiple choice questions. I guess for every question you answer correctly you give a hungry child 20 grains of rice. It’s not much, but if you want to improve your vocabulary I’m sure all your hard earned answers will feed someone at least once.

You can play as long as you want and as many times as you want!!! Make it your job to play this game and answer at least one question right every day!

Baby Bok Choi

Published by Derek under Pictures, Personal on January 19, 2008

Today was great.  Nathan and I went to the AS220 farmers market this afternoon. We found amazing carrots, squash, potatoes, and some apples. We also found some baby bok choi. It was all really cheap and really good. They were all a few months old from being kept in cold storage, but at least I’m making an attempt to buy and eat locally!

When we got back we got to work on lunch. I made a carrot soup with the carrots and potatoes. It was the best one yet. While the soup was simmering Nathan and I decided to make an apple pie with the apples we bought. Of course neither of us knew how to make a pie so we went to the trusty web.

http://pages.cs.wisc.edu/~roy/ApplePie/long.html

This was the recipe we used, except we used whole wheat flour for the crust and we didn’t have instant tapioca so we left that part out. I have to say despite the initial appearance it came out really well! Here’s a pic:

It’s no Pastiche but I’m glad I know how to make a pie now!

For dinner we used the bok choi in a tofu and cashew nut stir fry. It was my first time using hoisin sauce so I think next time I will let the tofu marinate more and use less oil. It was still a nice a dinner. Two completely vegan meals in one day… not too shabby!!!

On another note, I finished my new song and will be recording it soon for you all to hear!

What You Do is What You Live

Our spoken word and thus our written words are forever separate from true experience.

Experience is what I believe to be right now.  It could be when you are looking at a view or listening to a song.  Action and Awareness are our gifts to the experience.

GO TO THIS ADDRESS AND WATCH THE 20 MINUTE VIDEO. THEN SEND THE VIDEO TO SOMEONE ELSE AND TELL THEM TO DO THE SAME THING.

I’m only asking because I feel that we have choice in life. We choose to make things the way we want them to be. I am choosing to make them better. I only hope we all can see the beauty inside so we can someday see it manifested around us in the world we all share and live in. Mother Earth is a part of us and the more we take the more we give up, but we have the choice. We can believe in the power of love and try to find a way. I am trying. I hope you all try with me.

If you haven’t gone to the link yet please make it your next moment in existence. I believe it is imperative and our responsibility to be aware and conscious of the choices we make. Please, please watch it.

Peace and Love
